F1: Control and Keypad
An F1-family code generally points to the control board or a stuck key on the keypad. If a button is physically stuck or the membrane is damaged, the control reads a continuous press and faults. If the board itself has an internal error, it flags the same family. A transient F1 often clears with a power reset at the breaker; one that returns points to a model-specific keypad or control-board fault that needs replacement.
F2: Over-Temperature
An F2-family code means the oven exceeded a safe temperature. This is the code you should never simply reset and keep using. It usually means a relay on the control is stuck closed and keeps sending power to the heating element, or the temperature sensor has failed in a way that lets the oven run away. Because it is a safety-related fault, it needs prompt diagnosis of the relay, sensor and control.

F3 and F4: the Temperature Sensor
The F3 and F4 families point at the oven temperature sensor, an open circuit and a short circuit respectively. The sensor is a resistance probe, and when its wiring opens or shorts, or the probe itself fails, the control loses its temperature reading and posts the code. This is the most common Thermador oven fault, and replacing the sensor, and checking its wiring connection at the back of the oven, is a straightforward OEM repair.

Thermador has used several control generations, so the exact digits and wording differ between an older Professional range and a newer Masterpiece oven.
