How the Defrost Cycle Works
A frost-free Sub-Zero runs a periodic defrost cycle in which a heater briefly melts the frost that collects on the evaporator coil, and the meltwater runs out through a drain. When any part of that cycle fails, frost accumulates faster than it can clear. The coil ices over, the air that should carry cold through the cabinet is blocked, and the fresh-food side warms while the freezer, closer to the ice, stays cold. That specific pattern is the signature of a defrost fault.
The Parts That Fail
Three components are usually behind it. The defrost heater melts the frost, and when it fails open, nothing clears the coil. The defrost thermostat or termination sensor tells the system when to run and stop the cycle, and when it fails, the cycle never triggers correctly. The control or timer that schedules the cycle can also fail. A separate but related fault is a blocked defrost drain, which lets meltwater refreeze into ice at the bottom of the freezer.

What an Owner Can and Cannot Do
You can confirm the doors seal, make sure nothing is blocking the interior vents, and note the pattern so a technician arrives informed. Manually defrosting the unit by powering it off may clear the ice temporarily, but if a defrost part has failed the frost returns within days. Sub-Zero shows no numeric codes, so there is no reset that fixes a model-specific defrost fault, it needs the failed part replaced.
